The Water Cycle: Nature's Recycling System
The water cycle is a continuous process that moves water through the Earth's systems, ensuring that water is constantly recycled and available for all living things.
The image below shows the different stages of the water cycle. It begins with the sun heating up water in lakes, rivers and oceans, causing it to evaporate and rise into the atmosphere as water vapor. As the water vapor cools, it condenses to form clouds, which eventually become heavy enough to release precipitation in the form of rain, snow or hail.
This precipitation replenishes water bodies and groundwater, allowing rivers and lakes to remain full. The water then flows back to the ocean, where the cycle begins again.
This cycle is essential for life on Earth, providing fresh water for drinking, agriculture and supporting ecosystems. Understanding the water cycle helps us appreciate the importance of conserving water and protecting our natural resources.
